The List: the UK’s hottest tickets of 2014

The new year promises a bumper crop of UK cultural highlights. Make a note and book early: these tickets will sell out fast.

1. Theatre: ‘Shakespeare in Love’

The next film to migrate to the West End will be the Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love (1998), adapted by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall and directed by Declan Donnellan. There will be lavish sets – the play is co-produced by Disney Theatrical – and there are rumours of a film sequel in the pipeline. Booking opens in February. 2. Opera: ‘Der Rosenkavalier’

Glyndebourne opens its 80th anniversary season with a new production of Richard Strauss’s comic opera, not seen at Glyndebourne since 1982. Robin Ticciati will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra with mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught as Octavian, the Rose Cavalier. 3. Pop: Beyoncé’s ‘Mrs Carter Show’

Fresh from releasing a surprise album, Beyoncé returns on the second European leg of the Mrs Carter Show world tour. She hardly needed new songs to sell the tour as she puts on an impressive performance, vocally and visually. Tickets on sale now. 4. Art: Henri Matisse, ‘The Cut-Outs’

His compelling and colourful cut-outs established Matisse as a leading figure in modern art and many are seen together for the first time in this exhibition of 120 works, showing at Tate Modern before transferring to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 5. Food and drink: Craft Beer Rising

The rise of craft beer from small independent breweries was one of the biggest foodie success stories of 2013 so it’s apt that the 2014 pop-up season kicks off with this three-day celebration.
