Snapshot: ‘Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival’ (2008)

The painting on the right is by Peter Doig, a Scottish-born artist whose work rose to prominence in the 1990s almost despite the prevailing fashion for conceptualism.

Born in 1959 in Edinburgh, Doig spent a peripatetic childhood in Trinidad and Canada before studying art in London.

In 2003, a year after returning to live in Trinidad, the artist started a weekly film club in his studio near Port of Spain. The image on the right, inspired by an audience member walking between the projector and the screen, was used as a poster for the 2008 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. It is included in Cinematic Visions: Painting at the Edge of Reality, a group exhibition at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London which closes today – the same day as No Foreign Lands, a major show of Doig’s work over the past 10 years, opens at the Scottish National Gallery (until November 3); it will travel to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in early 2014.
