Veteran LA boho Chuck E Weiss – who palled around with Tom Waits in his thirsty beatnik days and inspired Rickie Lee Jones to write “Chuck E’s in Love” – occasionally surfaces with an album of unreconstructed rock and roll and R&B.

Notwithstanding the presence of celebrity acolyte Johnny Depp on various instruments, Red Beans and Weiss is his best yet.

“That Knucklehead Stuff” is loose, Dr John-style funk, “Dead Man’s Shoes” is stomping blues about a hepcat who dies “of too much rhythm and booze” and “Oo Poo Pa Do in the Rebop” is pantomime swamp rock, Weiss growling away with hammy relish.
