Low-cost airline Wizz Air has announced it will be setting up its first UK airport base at London’s Luton airport.
The FTSE 250 airline, which is focused on eastern and central Europe, said Luton – where it is the second largest carrier – would be the site for its 28th base set up with an Airbus A320 aircraft. The move will create 36 jobs.
Wizz Air also announced three new routes from Luton to Tel Aviv in Israel, Prishtina in Kosovo and Kutaiki in Georgia. Last year, Wizz Air carried over 5m passengers from the airport.
József Váradi, chief executive said:
By establishing base operations at London Luton, where Wizz is already the second largest operator and an important supporter of local jobs with our business partners, we are also creating direct local jobs with one of Europe’s fastest-growing airlines for the first time.
