Clifford Jordan’s passionate sound and rooted intellect reflect his time in the mid-60s with Charles Mingus playing alongside fellow saxophonist Eric Dolphy.

This intriguing set captures him in mature form a few years on, alongside recordings he produced under the title The Dolphy Series. These include spiky-but-melodic quartets led by Don Cherry, an Ed Blackwell percussion extravaganza and a Pharoah Sanders blast.

And as a bonus, there’s a return to form by bassist Wilbur Ware after a decade off-scene. Lovely music, and a specialist must-have.
